As the Houston Texans headed into a major playoff game on Saturday against the Baltimore Ravens, news about the team’s ownership is rumbling on the sidelines.
Janice McNair, the principal owner of the team since 2018, is the subject of a guardianship petition by one of her sons. Robert Cary McNair, Jr is asking a probate court to declare his 87-year-old mother incapacitated and to appoint him as her guardian.
Janice opposes the legal action, saying Robert filed for guardianship without her knowledge. She alleges in court documents that her son is making claims about her health, finances and mental health, all in an attempt to obtain sensitive financial and personal information.
Another son, Cal McNair, CEO of the football team, is on his mother’s side of this media-charged story. What do guardianship cases like this one tell us about preventing family feuds that spill into court? On this Life Happens episode, Aaron Connor and Lou Pierro analyze the facts and explain how guardianship works – whether you own a multimillion-dollar football team or any size estate.
